In-situ repairs up to 3 MW and workshop overhauls up to 1 MW
Specialist electrical and mechanical repair for wind turbine generators and rotating equipment, from in-situ nacelle work on turbines up to 3 MW to full workshop rewinds and overhauls up to 1 MW.
WR Group provides specialist electrical and mechanical repair for wind turbine generators and rotating equipment, from work carried out in the nacelle to full workshop overhauls. With our own rotating equipment workshop in Birtley and GWO-trained site engineers, we support turbine owners, operators and O&M providers across the UK. Our aim is to get turbines back into generation quickly and cost-effectively.
Not every fault means bringing a generator down. Our engineers hold GWO Basic Safety Training and can replace generator bearings in situ on turbines up to 3 MW. This avoids the cost and downtime of a crane lift and a full component exchange. We also provide on-site fault-finding, electrical testing, insulation resistance checks and mechanical inspection. These give you a clear picture of a machine's condition before any major decision is made.
When a generator needs more than site work, our workshop provides a complete repair route for machines from 30 kW up to 1 MW. Each machine is stripped, inspected and fully tested. Where required, we carry out stator and rotor rewinds, bearing and seal replacement, slip-ring and brush gear refurbishment, and cleaning, stoving and re-varnishing, followed by final electrical and mechanical testing.
Rewinding and overhauling an existing generator is often a faster, lower-cost alternative to buying new. This is especially true for the many small and medium turbines on UK farms and community sites, where replacement generators can be expensive or hard to source.
Our workshop also handles the other rotating plant found in and around wind turbines:
Because our electrical and mechanical capabilities sit under one roof, we can repair a machine completely rather than splitting the work between several subcontractors. Every repair comes with a detailed condition report, clear repair recommendations and a quotation before work goes ahead.
We're happy to work as a repair partner behind your own field teams. You keep the site and lifting work, and we handle inspection, repair and return, ready for reinstatement.
